What changed
The Oct. 15 baseline holds with one availability twist. The Tallahassee Democrat reported Oct. 19 that frontcourt player Alex Steen returned through a court injunction, while 247Sports, On3 and Seminoles.com previews from Oct. 21 through Oct. 23 set up LSU as the final exhibition. Florida State still has played zero regular-season games.
Why it matters
Florida State went 18-15 and 10-8 in the ACC last season. Now the Seminoles are 0-0, their top eight scorers are gone, and head coach Luke Loucks has portal points but zero shared minutes. This is construction, not a climb.
What to watch
Watch Taylor's efficiency and turnover control against Florida, Tennessee and Houston in regular-season games. Also watch whether frontcourt player Alex Steen and freshman Ponder earn steady rotation minutes by December.
What would change our mind
This call flips if Florida State defends in the ACC's top half and gets steady lead-guard play for several regular-season weeks. A November home stumble or an injury to a key transfer forces a rewrite.
The counterevidence
- The 82-71 Auburn exhibition and the coming LSU exhibition are practice. Four double-figure scorers and freshman Ponder working the glass prove nothing about regular-season efficiency.
- Taylor must turn lower-major volume into ACC creation, and On3 reported that Loucks targeted defensive improvement before Auburn. The point-of-attack defense is unproven.
Checkpoint: Florida A&M Rattlers, 2026-11-03.
